What Should You Say To A College Coach?

Speaking to university level coaches for the first time can be very intimidating and confusing for student athletes and their parents.

How To Talk To College Coaches

What do I say if they ask this? How do I respond if they ask that? What questions do I ask and how should I ask them? These are all very valid concerns and questions, especially if the college sports recruiting process is new to you and your family.

It may be easy for us to say, having been the coach asking those questions to student athletes and their parents, but don’t worry, you’ll be fine!

Below are some questions for college coaches that contact you. Think of these questions simply as a tool to guide your conversation. There is no need to go through the list one by one, and many of the questions you don’t ask will be answered through the course of the conversation. These questions are meant for you and your family to get a better feel for the coach, their athletic program and their university. The questions are separated into three basic categories, although not all questions are specific and may be applicable to multiple categories.

Academic Questions

  • Does your university offer the degree program I want to study? For example, sports medicine, engineering, teaching/education and so on…
  • What is the ratio of students to professors? What’s the average class size?
  • How many undergraduate students does your school have?
  • What’s the population of the city your school is in?
  • Has your school recently received national acclaim or top degree program ranking?
  • What academic resources are available for athletes?

Financial Questions

  • How many athletic scholarships do you have for your program?
  • How much athletic scholarship money is available for my incoming class?
  • Can you combine athletic scholarship money with academic scholarship money?
  • Can I increase my athletic scholarship amount on a year-to-year basis?
  • What is the total cost of attendance for your school?
  • Do you provide financial assistance for official visits?
  • What type of insurance coverage do I need?
  • Can I earn extra money while enrolled?

Athletic Questions

  • After watching my video, what do you like about the way I play? What do you see I can improve on?
  • What system and style of play do you prefer? How do you see me fitting into that system and style of play?
  • How many players do you normally carry on your roster each year?
  • What conference do you compete in and what was your overall record the last three years?
  • How do you normally travel for away games?
  • Do you have any other international players on your team?
  • What does your off-season training entail?
  • What fitness assessments do you use for preseason?

Remember, when communicating with any university level coach to always let your personality show through and be confident! Get to know them as much as they want to get to know you. Don’t be afraid to ask any other questions not listed. There’s no bad question to help inform you in making the right choice of which university to attend, and the CCR team is here to help if you need it.
